A Bad Day for An Allergist Appointment

Junior had an allergist appointment today. We have never seen this "Doctor" before. They mailed me the new patient packet, which I got earlier in the week and filled out as completely as I could. (To the point of explaining a few things on the questionaire).

We arrived early. About 20 minutes early. I wasn't asked for my insurance card when we signed in, I just handed the nurse my packet signed the sign in sheet and sat down with my mother in law to attempt to entertain Junior for what I thought would be about twenty minutes till our appointment. A full forty minutes later, we were told it would be just a few more minutes (and that was only because I asked.). Yes, you read that right - 40 minutes after we arrived we were seen. Actually it was more like 45. Either way by then I was mad, Jr was ready to do something else and Grammie was running out of ideas to entertain him. Not once were we addressed in the waiting room - which was tiny and PACKED. Most where there to get their allergy shots and where more or less in & out fairly quickly.

Once we gotten taken back to the exam room there was ANOTHER patient in the room waiting for his shot. The nurse told him to STAND BEHIND THE DOOR, and she would give him his shot, and told us to sit down in the chair. I thought "Okay, maybe there was a little bit of a miscommunication here, they will get it sorted out and we can get on with our time with the Dr." I should have known that something was wrong. They funneled in, one after another (with the nurse) during our ENTIRE visit! Easily there where atleast 6-10 other patients that got shots IN THE SAME EXAM ROOM as us. DURING our visit! And to top it off, the Dr seemed to write off any of the things I was telling him about Jr. He wants Jr to go on a decongestant for the congestion he has (something I've been saying to our family practice Dr for a while which I will go back to him and pass on), but he wants him to that in place of the zyrtec we are currently on in addition to that he wants us to use Nasonex on Jr twice a day for the next two days and everyday after that to see if it helps the congestion. IF Jr's sinuses are like mine, he may not actually be allergic to anything - he just has overactive sinuses who literally over react to everything like mine and would need to take something different that Nasonex (it doesn't work for me.)

Either way, this visit felt like a waste of an afternoon. I did not feel that the Dr valued anything I had to say let alone put his full attention on my son and what we are concerned about. Not to mention the constant distraction of having other patients in the room. I could be wrong, but I would think that discussing symptoms, family history etc with other patients in hearing range (i.e. door not being shut) is a HIPA violation.

So my plan of action is this: I am calling the insurance company tomorrow to get names of OTHER pediatric allergists (Grammie thinks I should wait till I get back to TX so any tests don't have to be repeated) here in our area and seeing which one would work best for us. I may be willing to walk away from a Doctor appointment feeling a little unsettled about a visit like this one if it were about me, but I'm sorry my son deserves better. And quite frankly I'm not going to tolerate it. (And in the future will probably not tolerate it when it comes to myself either!)

Invasion of Privacy

We found out today that my Brother & Sister in Law's house was robbed today. Thankfully the kids where at school, and my sister-in-law found out that her house had been robbed prior to the kids coming home from school - not that it makes it any less tramatic for my niece and nephews, but still good that the kids had mom and dad there when they came home to it.

Nothing is worse then having your personal space invaded like that. To anyone who hasn't ever had such an experiance the best I can equate it to, is having your purse stolen (if your a woman, or if you carry a "bag" if your a guy I guess) or for you manly men, your vehicle being broken into. (the later has happend to both me and Chris in the past). Knowing that someone has intentionally invaded your space and removed your belongings for whatever reason really can be unnerving. Not only that, it makes you mad. Mad that someone would care so little about somone else's personal space to invade it. Mad that things that may seem trivial, really are important. (totally referring to my nephews insane need for video games - yes the video consoles are GONE... controllers, system & games - everything!)

As a family member - it makes me mad for them. I know what it feels like to have everything you think is "safe" violated. And it sucks that there is nothing I can do to make it better or make those feelings of home being "safe" return agian. As much as I wish I could... I feel just as helpless as I'm sure they do (to some degree.)

Epiphany

Moving back to your "hometown" always holds some uncertainty. Especially when you had a crappy highschool experiance. Maybe that crappy experiance wasn't just highschool but a part of your childhood. And seeing as I'm pretty confident that there are maybe three people from highschool who read this blog and will understand what it is I am referring to - with out getting into specifics.

Everyone has a "bully" in their life. It make come in the form of a egotistical boss, the know it all friend who has the "my way or the highway" attitude or maybe even the passive aggressive "whatever" person who will inevitably hold a grudge. Perhaps your the "thug" in someone elses life and you didn't know it.

My "intimidator" from the past recently came back into my life. Well lets just say they where attempting to in a manner I could handle prior to last week. Then they changed the game. Contact was made (not the physical kind - but unpleasant none the less). They have attempted to make a place I was enjoying going somewhere that I don't want to be - due to the possiblity of running into them. This "goon" has had the ability to make me physically sick (reference the raging migraine that is working on dissapating). I spent some quality time on my own this morning soaking in the hot tub trying to figure out what I was going to do.

So here it is.. all the things I laid out as expectations still stand. Accountablity is required - not an option. It's not my fault that you feel like your missing out. You had the option to be included and chose not to rise to the occasion. Blindsiding is NOT an option. You may feel that because I was in a public place that it was ok to approach me. Next time don't smirk like you've won a prize because in reality - your just making it harder to reach. Certianly do not change the way the game is played... incase you failed to notice you do not hold the position of authority anymore. It's mine. I worked very hard to quell the anger and resentment I have towards you - it's up to YOU to not entice it back out of the closet. I do not see any benifit for me in continueing the game - there are only benifits for you. Therefor I have nothing to loose, while you have a lot to loose. I am not nostalgic for the way things where. And since that is the case - I'm not worried about what "might" be missing. I am happy with how my life has progressed since you chose the path you did. I have realized I don't need you or the other one who left long before you did. The choice is now yours and you have everything to loose in this battle of wills... I stand to loose nothing and refuse to put anything else of myself into this and you will not make things any rougher or unpleasant any longer.

Ill-informed Piss Me Off!

“Children deserve full-functioning, natural, loving, dedicated relationships with both of their parents equally, in and out of marriage, whenever possible.Which feminist along the way forgot to read the manual? Equal means equal."
Taken from www.sharedparenting.org

This is a quote found on a few websites I recently saw regarding “shared parenting”. I’m happily married, with a brand new son so why am I looking at shared parenting websites? A friend of mine is currently going through a legal battle with an ex husband who has a proven track record of not holding up his end of their “shared parenting” plan. His (the ex-husband’s) mother thinks that what she wants is what she should get and had created a legal battle that has dragged on for some time.

While I agree that all children deserve to have all the things mentioned in the quote above, I part with the ones who subscribe to this way of thinking as being unconditional regardless of what the individual circumstances are. My friends Lizze & Rob have shared the parts of their story throughout their blog that they can. The parts that do not jeopardize their son’s current situation, and give a small piece of the situation that is going on is what they choose to share with those who care to read all of it. Most would think if you don’t want the comments, don’t put it out there… but by them sharing their story they are indeed opening themselves up to comments from people who don’t take the time to find out what the entire story is. This happened recently and is what caused me to want to voice my own opinion.

I have spoken to both Rob & Lizze at great lengths about this situation. While, admittedly, I do not know everything about the situation from what I do, I can assure you that they are truly loving parents who are fighting for a child who often fights against himself. Never, have they said outright that they do not want him to know his father, but quite the opposite. They are just as confused as poor Gavin is as to why his FATHER is not completing the necessary steps to ensure a safe environment for his son. Furthermore, both are heartbroken that he is so removed from Gavin’s life.

You know what else? I grew up with a biological parent who CHOSE to not have anything to do with my life. My mom, much like Lizze (and Rob) never spoke badly about my biological father. At times, yes she made excuses (much like Lizze & Rob have had to do for Gavin) for his lack of interest in me or my life. As an adult, I found him and questioned what I had been told. It was true and actually put in a nicer form then what was the actual truth. Due to Gavin’s conditions, he can’t do this. Rob & Lizze both know this. And yet, they have tried to foster a healthy relationship with his father for him but his father chooses to make the decisions he does and not include himself in Gavin’s life.

So I guess… this blog is more my response to a Mr. Joel Johnston who seemed to imply that Lizze and Rob where failing at their job of co-parenting. Get the facts Mr. Johnston (if that is in fact your name) and realize that sometimes a blog does not and cannot contain all of the facts that would make the situation crystal clear to you. Your comments where about as rude as someone who walks up to parents of any child and suggests that they are lacking as a parent based on the behaviors/interactions that you see in a split second. Go ahead and claim that there is PAS (parental alienation syndrome) being caused here, because I can assure you, it’s not. And by all means, I’m sure that Lizze and Rob both would love to have some help for a day, week or a month… why don’t you offer to walk in their shoes as they fight to give their son what IS in his best interests while dealing with all aspects of what they are against.

Bugs in My Coffee

Jr was up all night last night. Mostly fussy, no screaming - thankfully. And per the pediatritian, no caffiene for me (it can cause reflux in Jr) AT ALL. After getting only an hour and here and there cat naps last night, today is not going to be a good day for me..

And it sooo didn't help to find a little bug floating in my coffee (DECAF COFFEE!)!!!!!

Minor Meltdowns & Dr Appointments

Jr is almost 10 days old, and I had my first meltdown last night. Breast feeding has not been pain-free for me. I've had two Lactation Consultants tell me that he's not taking enough of the nipple in (or getting it deep enough in his mouth) and that is what is causing me pain. Jr's fussiness yesterday and starting the morning off with hourly feedings did not help either. By 3 am this morning, my nipples hurt so bad I couldn't do it anymore, so we resulted to fixing him an ounce of formula. While Chris fed him, I got out my pump and pumped as much as I could. Mostly in hope that if we were going to result to using a bottle it was atleast going to be breast milk in it. Chris was really supportive the entire time, reassuring me that just because I was having a minor setback it wasn't all over but the crying. (even though I was already crying)

48 Hour Check up - Post Hospital Release

Jr had his 48 hr check up today from being released from the hospital. WHOO HOOO here are the stats:

Weight: 8.8oz - we are half way back to birth weight already!!!
Length: still 21in
Bili Level after the Bili Check: 9.7 WHOO HOOO!!!!

We are supposed to stop by tomorrow to have another bili check with the hand held wand thingy, mostly because the Ped wants to make sure that his levels don't rebound agian especially with the weekend coming up. She said that he's still perfect, and even alot less yellow! :D We also talked to her about his feeding, and explained that I wasn't getting much help from the lactation consultants on how to fix the issues we are having, just that they need to be fixed. She checked Jr for thrush (which he didn't have), and then checked my nipples. She said that because they are flat I should use a nipple shield... so we shall see how that goes tonight! Finally a suggestion on HOW to fix the problem, not just "You need to fix this..." Hopefully no more melt downs too soon in our future!

Pregnancy & Toliet Paper

At the beginning of pregnancy, you are either puking or peeing. Crude as it sounds, it’s true. (Well if you’re unlucky enough to get morning sickness in ANY degree). Either way you’re spending a lot of time in the bathroom. In the middle of pregnancy it’s a sick wish to spend more time in the bathroom – but for other reasons. Some deal with constipation that just will not seem to right itself. And then it’s like a flick of a switch – your back to the bathroom all the time; possibly puking, but mostly due to your child’s head being thoroughly wedged against your bladder.

What this amounts to is that the first couple of months you start wondering where the hell the toilet paper is going. It takes a while before you realize that you are going through roll after roll faster then normal because of you! Then things level off for a little bit, and you figure out that, okay you just need to restock the T.P. more often then before and you get into a buying pattern that works. But once your child finds that wedging his (or her) head into your bladder and taking their sweet time in paying attention to their eviction notice, your back to the constantly running out syndrome again.

If you can’t tell, once again, we are out of toilet paper and I’m quite irritated about it! It’s extremely irritating to realize that you are once again out of toilet paper at 4 am and you know that you will need to make at least three if not four more trips to the bathroom before you will make it to the store!

ARRRGGG

Am I done yet???

June 27, 2008

FINE!!! I admit it!

My wonderful husband pointed out to me this morning that I'm jealous. So many people from the iVillage message board that I've posted/lurked on have started having their little ones, and even two of my friends (one from there, one through blogging) and all I want is Jr to get HIS eviction notice so we can see/hold/cuddle him. According to Chris, I'm varying shades of green at this point.

UM HELLO!!!!! I officially have LESS THEN 30 days till my due date. I want my body back to just belonging to me (is this selfish? Yes. Is it a crime? NO.). I want to see my little guy and get to know him. I want to see who he takes after in the family looks wise. I want to see how the boys react to him, and the fact he's not going "home" at night, but is moving in with us. I want to see how much he changes the first day he's here with us, let alone the first couple of days.

Either way, I'm just ready for him to be here already. Everything is ready for him... all he has to do is follow Cooper's lead, and Emmett's lead ;) and then we'll all be happy :) (well except for Chris who is starting to realize his prized "sleep" is about to become non-existant.)

An Open Letter

An Open Letter

This is addressed to those of you who feel the need to belittle your children because you think they are “fat” or they don’t look/act/dress a certain way.

Odds are you where told as a child to “clear your plate – there are starving children in _____ (fill in the blank country)”. As a result now as an adult – you clear your plate. Take a moment – check your waist line. Oh wait?! Self examination isn’t allowed? Why not?! You are forcing your child to do it every time you tell them “if you eat this/that/or whatever that you are going to stay/get fat”. What kind of parent are you being if you are doing this to your kid?

What happened to raising a healthy, self confident child? Where did the days of self discovery and building a healthy self esteem go? Are they gone with the days of wearing a seatbelt wasn’t a requirement? Did they disappear along with letting our kids explore until the sun went down during their summer vacation? Simply gone like yesterday?

Now children are forced to believe they need to be like the kids they see on TV and on a magazine page. Are you contributing to this? Are you telling them that if they eat/drink this/that/or whatever that they will never look like “that”? Or are you telling a young man that if he doesn’t work out or play this sport or that sport that he’ll never get the girl on the TV/magazine page?

Are YOU making healthy choices in your life? Or are you just expecting your kid to? Does your child see you living as an example or a “do as I say – not as I do”? I have a teenage niece. I DO NOT want her to be modeling her life after someone who is on a magazine page, or trying to follow the “latest” trends. I want her to be a strong independent woman when she grows into the woman she is SUPPOSED to be. And you know what? She is surrounded by women in our family who are anything BUT sticks. We are all at various stages in our life and various weights. My niece has had a front row and center seat to watching my mother in law over the past three years lose over a hundred pounds. That weight loss wasn’t in order to “look a certain way”- it has been about getting and staying healthy. My niece has watched her grandma go from being someone who’s self confidence was very low, to someone who is proud of WHO she is and what she has accomplished. I like to think that it has influenced my niece in a positive manner that will further her understanding of what a real-life role model is.

These are the types of role models kids need. Not some stick figure who’s under dressed in a too-low cut outfit with over done make up. Kids need to be shown that as adults we are making healthier choices because we want to be around long enough to see them prosper and live their own lives as adults. Not because they don’t’ “fit” into a mold that society as a whole has created with unrealistic expectations.

If you are forcing these unrealistic expectations on your child – try forcing them on yourself first and see how it affects you before you do irreparable damage to your kid. You may find by hearing someone tell you that if you eat/drink this/that/or whatever that your self esteem will wither away until you find yourself unsure of any decision you make. Seriously consider, is that how you want your kid to grow up? Is this the type of adult you want your child to be?

Insensitive Clod

I’ve decided that I am no longer watching A Baby Story on TLC. This isn’t because something bad happened, but because today there was a husband who actually had a clue.

It really sucks to figure out that while you are listening to this soon to be third time dad say ON CAMERA that he thinks his wife needs to be made to feel like she’s pretty while she’s pregnant, not fat or anything like that and he tells her at least once a day if not more that she’s pretty, and your husband only tells you things like this when you say something about him never saying nice things to me. Umm, when you say things like I’m your “gorgeous wife” doesn’t count when I make a comment about needing to hear it first. That kind of makes any comment you make at that particular point useless for about an hour or more.

You wonder why things for me aren’t like they use to be. Part of this is hormones, and part of it is you. Granted you’ve never been great about giving me compliments (like I only get them when I dress up or put make up on) but right now it really counts.

And I may not be on bedrest, but when I’m dealing with all the crap (health wise) that I am already and you get pissy because I either didn’t do anything all day while I was home, or make snide comments about it, personally my opinion is you can take a flying leap. And comments like what were made at dinner last night, really don’t fly to far, except to send my anger soaring, and really are not helping your overall situation right now.

I'm Through!

I’m tired. Tired of constantly being the one who “puts myself out” for other people. I’m great at meeting new people. But I guess I’m naive too. Because out of all the friends I make it seems most of them realize I’m a sucker. Yes a sucker whose personality doesn’t say no to anything, that volunteers herself to help people or do things when either I don’t necessarily want to or really have the time to.

I know some of the people who read this – will think that this applies to you. More likely than not it doesn’t. I’m not sure if the real reason or inspiration for this particular posting has access to my blog. And in the interest (my nice personality showing again) of the least amount of feelings being hurt I’m going to refrain from naming names. (I can assure you “Blog Stalkers” – you know who you are – this is in no way related to you ladies!)

Basically this blog stems from the feeling that I must be one of the easiest people to run over and some feel the need to do it with a steamroller. If I haven’t seen you in a long time – and there is a possibility of a missed connection, try telling me you are sorry you’re going to miss seeing me – not miss seeing my belly! Telling me this is not going to make me want to meet up with you. I have had enough issues with my ever expanding stomach that is currently more baby then fat (THANK YOU!), and given my own issues – I don’t need to hear that you are only interested in “how big” I’ve gotten. And that’s all I heard when you said you wanted to see my belly. In fact it pretty much ensures that I’ll do everything I can to not see you.

Also – doesn’t assume that when I say I’ve had issues that just means with the baby. Try asking about me and my health, because while I appreciate your interest in my child – he is not the only thing going on in my life right now.

And if I put myself out there to try and help you – don’t act like what I’ve done is no big deal. I may have put myself out more than what you witnessed or realized.

Friends call, email or write periodically to see how you’re doing. Most people who have spent even a small amount of time with or around me, realize I am pretty busy with school, but I usually find time to call or text people. If I take the time to call you or send you a text message, I was genuinely trying to catch up with you and see how you where doing. The least you could do is return a phone call or text me back to let me know what’s going on. Because when you don’t, it just goes to show me that our friendship isn’t as important to you as I thought it was. Or it just isn’t worth your time. I’m done with “one sided” friendships.

People Like This Make Me Sick!

First, there was the likes of Scott Peterson. Now there is this Moron.

The thought that these men can kill a pregnant woman is beyond upsetting to me. It's even more upsetting to me now. Maria Lauterbach, Laci Peterson and their unborn children DID NOT deserve what they went through. And now the fact that Lauren was found in Mexico, to ensure justice for his victim's families, the government has to agree not to pursue the death penalty. That's crap!

April 10, 2008

What's The Point?!

Blogging originally started as a way to report just facts. Then it grew. People started using it to post an online chronicle of their lives. This is what I use mine for. It is also the same reason that many of my “blog stalker” friends use theirs for. To vent about daily irritations, share small (or large) victories, to share the silly things their kids do. It’s the new way to keep family and friends across the U.S. “in touch” with what is going on in our daily lives with out them being physically present or sending out a huge mass email.

Given all of this, and that fact that blogs have become a “public domain” of sorts, why do some feel the need to show a lack of courtesy that they would show if expressing an opinion that differs from someone else? If we are in a face to face conversation, both parties are going to be polite I would hope. We can agree to disagree but do it in a polite and respectful fashion. Why do some people feel the need to comment on others blogs with mean or spiteful comments that often hit below the belt?

Several of my “blog” friends are at a similar juncture in their life as I am. They are pregnant; however they are or are not experiencing varying degrees of difficulty with their own pregnancies. Why in the world someone would want to post hurtful comments that they wouldn’t dare say to the same person in the face is beyond me. For two of these same friends, their blog and the online communities they frequent are their only contact to the outside world aside from their families and doctors visits because, for their health and safety and the health and safety of their unborn child they are on bed rest. Anyone choosing to post hurtful comments on their blogs would certainly tick me off, and cause me to get a little cranky. Their blogs allow them to be able to express the heightened stress associated with making sure they are doing everything that they can to make sure that their child has the best possible chance outside the womb – and anyone who thinks that this is anything less then courageous can take it up with me!

Just because this is a public forum does not mean that people are allowed to check their faculties at the door. Although this is an online forum and it allows for anonymity does not mean that you get to leave the manners your parents hopefully instilled in you when you sit down to your keyboard and begin reading. What was that saying we all learned in kindergarten? If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything. Or at least find a respectful way to voice your disagreement.

The Car Saga Continues....

Today made the second time I had to take my car back to the dealer. This time it was due to bubbles in the tint. When the porter brought the car up, the front windows where down - they were supposed to have been re-tinted and when it was done originally we were told not to roll them down for atleast 48 hours to allow it adequate time to dry so you can imagine our shock to see the windows down.

According to the service manager, the guy who came to "fix" the tint was only there (or had the car) for the hour that he was on lunch. He didn't check the car till right before we got there and said he only noticed a couple bubbles in the rear windshield. There were atleast 4 spots that the bubbles where still there. Needless to say, we are not impressed. And yet agian my car will be making another trip back to the dealer.

Warning: Rant ahead.

My friend is hosting my babyshower. She said before I even got pregnant that she wanted to host it. Okay, that's cool. Now my friend is a wonderful woman and I love her dearly and this is most likely more hormones than anything but I need to vent. My friend is trying to get through graduate school while working full time, her husband is working in another state (not close by in the least) and she has a college age son and a high school aged son living at home still. Needless to say she has a lot going on. We've been trying to figure out the best date for a baby shower for a while now.

Unfortuantely because we live so far away from family there really isn't going to be anyone from my family here. My mom's occupation is not the most conducive to her taking time off. If she takes time off she's loosing money, and if that is going to be the case I would rather her just wait and take the time off when Jr gets here. The only one who could really make it would be Chris' Mom. I really would like to have someone from my family here for the shower especially since this is my first child. I made sure that my friend knew that it is/was important to me that my mother in law be here for this. Despite the fact that I don't always get along with my mother in law, I do realize the fact that I am very lucky to have one who is so good to me.

Today I went to breakfast with the girls I play bunco with, because a former player and good friend was in town. It was a great time (and sorry Lizze I didn't get any pictures) till I went to leave. My friend who is planning the shower was also at the breakfast and she made a comment about how "Your mother in law is not helpful at all about planning the shower! She only gave me like two dates!" This kind of irritated me at the time - but uncharacteristically I let it go. I didn't say a word about it, just that we have 2 weddings in may on two seperate weekends and they are in diffrent places so it's rough. Then as I am putting my stuff in the car, my friend who is planning the shower tells me that she is thinking about the 25th of May - because that is the only weekend that will work for another friend. It was a contradiction of the impression she had given me beforehand. And that pretty much pissed me off. So here I sit, ticked off wanting to say something but knowing that if I do it's going to be a hormonal rant and it's not going to help anyone or anything (because I'll feel worse afterward).

Sheesh This New Mom Thing Is Rough!

Okay so now that we know we are going to have a boy I feel like I can finish my registry at Babies R Us (I will also do one at Wal-Mart or Target too most likely). But this is HARD! I would like to say that I want an instruction manual on what to register for, but I have friends who tell me I need this or that, and of course no two friends agree on anything! Why is that? Probably because just like clothes or purses, not all people are going to like the same things therefore their opinions will differ.

I know I posted about unsolicited advice a couple of weeks ago, and this post is probably sounding quite contradictory and I’m sorry about that. Perhaps I am just feeling a tad overwhelmed by this prospect of figuring out what is right for my kid and he’s not even here yet! I guess it goes along with what my OB told me on Wednesday when I asked when I would get my energy back, “In about 18 years.”
