Jr is almost 10 days old, and I had my first meltdown last night. Breast feeding has not been pain-free for me. I've had two Lactation Consultants tell me that he's not taking enough of the nipple in (or getting it deep enough in his mouth) and that is what is causing me pain. Jr's fussiness yesterday and starting the morning off with hourly feedings did not help either. By 3 am this morning, my nipples hurt so bad I couldn't do it anymore, so we resulted to fixing him an ounce of formula. While Chris fed him, I got out my pump and pumped as much as I could. Mostly in hope that if we were going to result to using a bottle it was atleast going to be breast milk in it. Chris was really supportive the entire time, reassuring me that just because I was having a minor setback it wasn't all over but the crying. (even though I was already crying)
48 Hour Check up - Post Hospital Release
Jr had his 48 hr check up today from being released from the hospital. WHOO HOOO here are the stats:
Weight: 8.8oz - we are half way back to birth weight already!!!
Length: still 21in
Bili Level after the Bili Check: 9.7 WHOO HOOO!!!!
We are supposed to stop by tomorrow to have another bili check with the hand held wand thingy, mostly because the Ped wants to make sure that his levels don't rebound agian especially with the weekend coming up. She said that he's still perfect, and even alot less yellow! :D We also talked to her about his feeding, and explained that I wasn't getting much help from the lactation consultants on how to fix the issues we are having, just that they need to be fixed. She checked Jr for thrush (which he didn't have), and then checked my nipples. She said that because they are flat I should use a nipple shield... so we shall see how that goes tonight! Finally a suggestion on HOW to fix the problem, not just "You need to fix this..." Hopefully no more melt downs too soon in our future!

I hope that you don't mind me leaving you my advice on here :) Lansinoh is a Godsend!! It's a little pricey but a great investment. You can find it in the breastfeeding section of the baby dept. I used it with Sarah Rose after each feeding for the first few weeks and didn't have any of the problems that I did with getting sore like I id with my others. And also no soap of any kind on those nipples ever!!!! I cannot express this enough. It NEVER failed, if I accidently got some soap on them in the shower, moisturizing body washes included, I got sore within a few hours afterwards!! Ask any lactation consultant, all you need to keep them clean is the water from your shower running down them, NO SOAP!! I don't care what any one tells you!! And the flat nipples thing will resolve it's self after a few good wees of nursing :) I had that with Cayleb and he got so frustrated and so did I!! It took us about 3 weeks to get the nursing thing under wraps :) Just remember that nursing is the best thing for your baby, don't feel guilty that you gave him a bottle. We gave Cayleb a few with breast milk in the beginning too because I just got to frustrated at 3 in the morning dealing with a cranky, frustrated baby who just wouldn't latch on!! A bottle here and there won't hurt him. I always suggest using your milk, to encourage your supply, but sometimes it might be even too painful to pump. Just take a few deep breaths, and know that you are an awesome mommy :) You and Chris are the best parents for little man :) You'll do fine :) I hope that I don't sound too motherly.... I just had a few tidbits for you, take them for what they are worth :)
sorry there were so many typos!!
